Yesterday we visited a sacred grove outside of Madurai.  This stretch of forested land is understood as belonging to a local deity and so is  protected by villagers.  Many terracotta votive offerings lined the path into this serene and verdant space.

We learned a lot from our guide, Dr. V, as well as from the paper on sacred groves that Kegan wrote for our Course Reader.

After the sacred grove we visited a 17th century hilltop fort with several concentric walls.  After climbing up, Callie and Elissa enjoy the view of the rice paddies, coconut and palm trees below.

Alanna and Amy in the garden at St. Mary's Church in Chennai, the oldest Anglican church in India.  Located inside the walls of Fort St. George, this chiurch still has an active congregation and was just concluding  after-church tea & cookies on the Sunday we visited.
